LMAA and CMAC Statistics for 2022

The London Maritime Arbitrators Association (LMAA) and the China Maritime Arbitration Commission (CMAC) have reported on maritime dispute statistics for 2022.

Under the rules of the LMAA, 1807 cases were initiated, 420 awards were made, 93 awards were made as a result of oral hearings. The rest was considered according to the documents. There were only 12 mediations.

CMAC accepted 190 cases, that shows an increase of 123.5% over the previous year. A third of the cases came from other countries, including Russia. 51 cases were accepted for mediation.

As you can see, the statistics show a more benevolent and confident attitude of China towards the mediation procedure in maritime disputes. Although it might be possible that such a significant difference arose due to the cost of the procedure.

We will talk about the cost of the arbitration and mediation procedure in the following publications.
